The Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, ‘First Minister for Wales and Julie Morgan, MP for Cardiff North, were delighted to present certificates in English to 16 people from across South Wales who had achieved the first grade of the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) qualification. 46 more people are currently working towards the qualification.

The event was hosted by the Nationwide Association for Integrated Development (NAID). NAID work closely to improve the English skills of speakers of other languages.

Julie Morgan MP said:
“I wholeheartedly congratulate these students on their great success. Their hard work has really paid off. As many of you will agree, English can be a very difficult language and many of these students have had to put a great deal of effort in to achieve this qualification. It was inspirational to see people from Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi backgrounds working together to improve each others English skills every Sunday morning.

“It is essential that we work hard to ensure all communities are well-integrated into British society and improving English skills can form an important part of this integration process. I was overwhelmed by the students’ willingness to learn with one individual keenly taking classes despite having lived in Cardiff for 30 years.

“Of course, none of this would have been possible without the hard work of Dilwar Ali and the tutors, who have volunteered their time to ensure that their students obtained these qualifications.”

The Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, ‘First Minister for Wales added:
“I am very impressed that people are voluntarily giving up their time on a Sunday both to teach and to learn English which will help them to integrate into Welsh society.”

Anwar Ali, a representative of NAID said:
I am delighted that The Rt Hon Rhodri Morgan, ‘First Minister for Wales and Julie Morgan MP for Cardiff North were able to attend this ESOL award ceremony and thank them presenting the certificates to candidates. NAID will continue to work together for the benefit of all communities nationally and internationally."
